About Monica

Monica Clarke was born in Cape Town, South Africa and calls herself an ‘Apartheid baby’, for she was 4 years old when Apartheid became the law in 1948. She was a  registered nurse and midwife before qualifying as a lawyer,  supporting the liberation movement as defence attorney in political trials, which resulted in her being hunted by the security police for her association with the African National Congress and she fled to seek, and was granted, asylum in the UK in the early 1980’s.

Monica now lives in London and offers talks and interactive presentations to organisations and educational institutions worldwide to support their work by talking about her experiences to help others see the dangers of accepting social practices and laws which attack and erode human rights.

"I speak my own story, to help heal my deep scars which are still raw in many places. An abused woman in a marriage for many years, I speak about that, too, to help others to find healing," says Monica
